Interview with Frankie&RikiAbi

Artist

This time, we get to know Frankie&RikiAbi and their thought on music in this exclusive interview.

Frankie&RikiAbi, 2 friends for many years, living apart from their town, making music remotely and trying to gather people around.

Where are you from?
We are both from the same town in Italy but split in Rome and Istanbul.

What is your main genre?
Electronica…from soundtracks to EDM ‘whatever is electronic’.

How long have you been making music?
For a lifetime in other forms/genres/names but 2 years with this project.

Can you tell us about your latest release and the background behind it?
We recently released ‘Burning Notre-Dome Skyjump Remix’. Our friend DJ Skyjump remixed our older track Burning Notre-Dome, we saw it jump from romantic cyberpunk to acid techno. The original track is about 2 distant lovers meeting in Paris for a night of passion, but their first kiss gets interrupted by the fire to the Cathedral. While our version sees the romantic side, DJ Skyjump brought up the fire.

What do you think of the music industry after 2022?
Not going anywhere good…and I am running out of strategies to live out of our music. The best is still stay independent, create your audience and make music for passion as a constant dialog with your audience.

Who is the most influential artist in your life?
We had many and different stages of our lives and according to what we were doing. But we never left our first loves like Enigma, Mike Oldfield, the Italian Claudio Simonetti, Tangerine Dreame, Jarre, Kraftwerk.

How do you think you differ from other artists?
We all differ, but we actually try to find points of connection. New and interesting music usually comes from the contacts and the mix among different genres. The approach is different…look at our track ‘Aztech Trail’ it has mongolian chanting on a Mexican mood, synthwave bass, a trap kick and a tango-like accordion…we did not expect that some DJs would go and re-propose this month after the promotion time!!

Who would be your dream collaboration?
With our dream artists indeed! But also in the indie scene, besides DJ Skyjump, we have some more surprising collaborations in progress.

What was the first album you bought?
Frankie was given some vynils of Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream. When I was kid with my own money I went buying Bad of Michael Jackson, Lovesexy of Prince (no comment…I was 10) and ‘To Whom may concern’ of Terence Trend Darby. I always loved a soul/funky vibe – very unexpected as a first buy ins’t it?

What is your favorite song at the moment?
I don’t have one, but I have a favourite genre ‘psytrance’ that I listen everyday while I go to work. I don’t know about Frankie…but I think we may agree on Innuendo or ‘The show must go on’ by Queen as a favourite track ever…for many reasons linked to our past.

What is your favorite words?
From Innuendo…oh yes we keep on trying…

What other hobbies or interests do you have?
Work 😉 and indeed family activities, watching movies with my wife, walk in the nature…

Tell us more about your upcoming project?
We have a surprising collaboration out in May and in April. We release a track in the style of Deep Forest, Enigma…with electronic and ethic elements together.
